Paper (i) A Flexible Testbed for 5G Waveform Generation & Analysis (14:30-15:30)

Abstract : A challenge of today’s 5G research is the plethora of waveforms, frequencies, and bandwidths being investigated.  This includes waveforms at wireless frequencies below 6 GHz, as well as waveforms at microwave and millimetre-wave frequencies.  In addition some of the waveforms being investigated may include wideband waveforms, with possibly up to 2 GHz of modulation bandwidths.  All of these introduce new test challenges for 5G signal generation and analysis–flexibility is key for today’s 5G research. This paper discusses a new flexible testbed for 5G waveform generation and analysis which can be used to investigate and to perform “what-if” scenarios for new emerging 5G waveform applications.  Co-existence scenarios between emerging 5G waveforms and legacy waveforms such as LTE are investigated.  Wideband signal generation and analysis case studies are shown, both at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies, with modulation bandwidths up to 2 GHz.  Amplitude and phase corrections of wideband waveforms are considered and examined.

Biodata : Randy Becker obtained his BSE with a major in Electrical Engineering from Walla Walla College in 1997 and an MSEE from the University in Nebraska in 1999. He then joined Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies where he has worked for 14 years in a variety of technical marketing roles. Randy started as a marketing engineerin the Spectrum Analysis Division; two years later he moved to the Signal Sources Division where he stayed for twelve years. Randy is currently a senior application specialist supporting various cellular technologies with a focus in W-CDMA and LTE. He is part of author team for LTE and the Evolution to 4G Wireless: Design and Measurement Challenges, 2nd Edition. 

 

Paper (ii) – Channel Characterizations for 5G Wireless Communications at Wireless Communication Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. (16:00-1730)

Abstract :  Nowadays, the demands for higher mobile wireless data rates and connectivity are increasing rapidly. Spectrum frequency bands below 6 GHz are now crowded and insufficient to cater for the future mobile broadband needs. Hence, in the next generation wireless communication, i.e., 5G, new frequency bands are required to mitigate the spectrum shortage issue. The frequency bands above 6 GHz are the candidate bands for 5G system. The channel characterizations are very important to have a good knowledge of the propagation channel characteristics at bands above 6 GHz, in order to design a robust and reliable 5G system. In this presentation, we will share some of the recent channel characterization works performed at WCC, UTM at different frequency bands in the range of 6-40 GHz for different line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios in indoor and outdoor environments using Keysight Channel Sounding Solution.

Speaker: Prof Dr. Tharek Abd Rahman

Biodata :  Prof. Dr. Tharek Abd Rahman is a Professor at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He obtained his BSc. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from University of Strathclyde UK in 1979, MSc in Communication Engineering from UMIST Manchester UK and PhD in Mobile Radio Communication Engineering from University of Bristol, UK in 1988. He is the Director of Wireless Communication Centre (WCC), UTM. His research interests are radio propagation, antenna and RF design and indoors and outdoors wireless communication. He has also conducted various short courses related to mobile and satellite communication to the Telecommunication Industry and Government body since 1990. He has a teaching experience in the area of mobile radio, wireless communication system and satellite communication. He has published more than 120 papers related to wireless communication in national/international journal and conference.
